The Native American Indian Dog(R) is an ancestor to the original Native dog who served as a working, utilitarian dog and companion to the Native Americans.

<strong>History</strong>
The Native American Dog was bred and utilized by the Native Americans for thousands of years..  They became an integral member of Native American society. Native dogs served their human companions as far north as the Arctic circle,  the current U.S., Mexico, and extending southwards through Central and South America.

Their abilities as working dogs were particularly important, because prior to the mid 1500s, when Spaniards introduced horses to the Americas, the Native American Indian Dog was the sole beast of burden, aside from the alpacas of South America . These dogs helped hunt game, served as pack animals, pulled a travois loaded with 250lbs of their owners possessions, or game meats, and made excellent guard and protection dogs for women, children, and older people in the villages.

Over the years, because of the scarcity of the original bloodlines of the dogs utilized by the Native peoples, two Native dogs secured by Karen Markel of Majestic View Kennels, one female dog coming second hand from a Native Nation in Idaho and a male coming second hand from a tribal nation located in Montana. Karen Markel then bred, Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky, Chinook, and German Shepherd into her two Native dogs. In 2001  Majestic View Kennels secured the first ever U.S. government registered trade mark on a breed of dog, and the "Native American Indian Dog," was officially born.

Today, the Native American Indian Dog is nationally recognized as a registered pure bred with four nationally known registries. Native American Indian Dogs can have distinct disparities in appearance. Size wise anywhere from between 55 pounds all the way up to an occasional 165 pounds.   Every nation of Native American had a different size and "look" to their dogs based on what tasks the Native Americans required of them and where they were geographically located.

The Native American Indian Dog is one of the very few breeds that are Hypoallergenic and even mixed with another dog breed, all the pups will be hypoallergenic as well.   With all other so called hypoallergenic dog breed mixes, there will be on average, 3 pups per litter that are not hypoallergenic.  Unfortunately, the asthmatic or pet allergic family member will not realize this until they get the puppy home and have an allergy or asthma attack.   Not so with the purebred NAID or any of the NAID "designer dog mixes.

Coat colors vary in color and hair coat length based on the geographic location of where they originated.   A famous Native American woman, Buffalo Bird Woman, who was in charge of breeding and training the dogs of the Hidatsa Nation, was quoted as saying, "Our dogs come in every color and color combination that our native squash or gourds come in."    The "spirit dog" of the Native Americans was a splotched or spotted dog and was used for ceremonial purposes as well a pack animals, draught animals or hunting dogs.  They were often used as "fishing dogs" as well, and would literally catch their owners fish supply for the entire year.   The Montagnais Natives of North Eastern Canada were known for their "tortoise shell" colored canines.   It would cost a whole years wage of $65.00  in the middle and late 1800's to purchase  their "spirit dog" for use in religious ceremonies.

The Native American Indian Dog has a double hair coat, and it comes in three different hair coat lengths.  The Native American dog sheds once annually, usually in the spring or early summer.  They do not shed in between times.  You can grab their hair by the handful and give it a big yank and you will not have a handful of hair.   If your NAID is shedding profusely, it is stress related, either nutritional or environmental, often a result of a protein poor, grain filled diet, or leaving the dog crated or left alone without companionship.

It is  sometimes wise on the long haired dogs to take them to the groomer for a total body shave in the spring.  Then they will spend the rest of the year growing back their hair coat and will not need to be brushed or bathed.  They  have no "doggy odor",  for which the re-creator of the breed, finds it absolutely wonderful, and with no "wet dog" odor either.

They love water and are web footed which means they are excellent swimmers and are equipped with natural snow shoes for deep snow trans versing.  It is impossible to freeze a NAID pup once they reach the age of 16 weeks even though totally immersed in water with sub-zero temperatures. Their wind-proof, water-proof hair coat protects them.  They will shake, roll in the snow and emerge totally dry.Native Americans would collect their dogs hair and spin it and weave it into coats, hats, gloves, footwear and blankets. Making for a light weight, very insulated garment.The Native American dog is very adaptable to severe temperature and climate change.  In a hot humid climate, they simply do not grow the inner, wind proof, water proof hair coat. There has never been an instance, to date, where a NAID living in any of the U.S. southern states, has ever succumbed to a fatality due to heat exposure.   The majority of the breed population is considered a "Nordic" dog breed type and able to thrive in minus 50 degree Fahrenheit temperatures.

With broad heads, wide-set almond shaped eyes,  prick ears, and a gently tapering muzzle, these dogs can be very striking physically.

<strong>Temperament</strong>
Every Native American tribe shared a pack of dogs with the whole village.   All dogs were "free roaming" meaning they were not contained or leashed or tied, but had to have the demeanor and willingness to come to whom ever called them for whatever task the villagers had in mind for them to accomplish. If the dogs did not obey immediately, they found themselves on the Native's dinner menu.    The Native American dog of today still retains that willingness and devotion to humans to obey and come when called.  If this breed loves and respects you, there isn't anything they wouldn't do for their humans.

They are extremely intelligent, and even "psychic".  Sensing evil, danger and detecting almost all human related health issues. They are excellent with children, and all household and barn yard pets, if raised with them.  They are non-dog aggressive and "doggy daycare" facilities across the United States "love" the NAID.  As they will take a shy, timid dog and pester it until it starts to relax and play with the other dogs.   The NAID will take a dog aggressive or human aggressive  animal and pin it to the floor and stand over it, refusing to let it move, until he or she has a major change in attitude. A firm "No" is usually all that is needed to discipline a Native American dog.  They are extremely sensitive to a word, look, action or motive that a person is projecting.

The Native American Indian Dog was bred to "work".  They are not a "couch potato" breed.   They require both mental and physical stimulation. They also almost all require a fenced in area or large enclosure to run and play in at will if their humans are not present.  They are much more content to be in a fenced in area outside, than to be locked up in the house when no one is home. Being locked and confined to a crate is a severe form of punishment for the NAID as well.  It is very similar to locking a young child in a closet all day long.  The NAID does not understand what they did so terribly wrong that their owner would lock them up to a fate worst than death.

The NAID is extremely intelligent, highly trainable for any task you have in mind for them to accomplish. They make an excellent S&amp;R dog, handicap assist, therapy dog, agility dog, draught or sled pulling dog, They can carry a 50lb back pack all day long.  They are great babysitters.

As far as a "guard dog" goes, an intruder may perish by suffocation due to a severe tongue lashing, and show the intruder where "Mom" hides her jewelry and will say with a canine grin and a tail wagging, "Come visit me again". But the "look" the NAID will give the intruder, and or a soft growl, communicating that the intruder is not welcome, is usually all that is needed to discourage an unwanted individual. Because the NAID can sense ill-intent or evil in a human, or an animal they actually make incredible guard and protection dogs.

<strong>Diet</strong>
The NAID thrives on a high protein, high fat diet.  No grain, sweet potato, or chicory root. Raw meat and bones are an excellent source of protein and great for their teeth, gums and your NAID will not have "doggy bad breath" either nor will the owner ever have to schedule a vet appointment for a teeth cleaning.   Raw, frozen meat , bones and all will not hurt a NAID and it also gives the NAID something to do other than chewing on your Italian leather shoes or leather furniture.

<strong>Health</strong>
Native American Indian Dog has no known genetic health issues and can live from 14 to 19 yrs of age. They very hardy and resilient, especially for dogs of this size. This dog should enjoy many healthy and happy years with you,  which is extraordinarily long!

What do you get when you cross a Poodle and a Labrador Retriever, two of the most intelligent and docile dog breeds in existence? Instant love! Who wouldn't fall in love with such an energetic, happy, smart and affectionate dog? While the Labradoodle hasn't been around that long (just a few decades), it is fast becoming one of the most popular pets of our era.

<strong>History</strong>
The term "Labradoodle" was first used in a book written in 1955 by Sir Donald Campbell entitled "Into the Water Barrier." However, the Labradoodle truly became known when the two breeds were crossed in 1988 by Wally Conron, an Australian breeder. Conron's ultimate goal was to design a guide dog that possessed the trainability and gentleness of the Labrador along with the low-shedding coat of the Poodle for individuals who suffered from allergies to fur and dander. Today, Labradoodle puppies are both popular family dogs as well as therapy and guide dogs around the world.

<strong>Types</strong>
There are basically three types of Labradoodles:
F1 , or First-Generation, are Labradoodle puppies which are bred from a Standard Poodle and Labrador Retriever. The F1 type may shed more than the other two types, simply because it is 50% Labrador.

F1B , or F1 Backcross, are Labradoodles which are bred from an F1 Labradoodle and a Poodle; essentially, this makes this type 75% Poodle, which means it is likely that such a dog will experience little to no shedding.

Multi-generation are Labradoodle puppies which are bred from two F1B types. Australian multi-generation Labradoodles generally originate from several generations of breeding Labradoodles to Labradoodles. Cross-breeding back to the Standard Poodle ensures that the coat will be non-shedding and with no odor. This type of Labradoodle may also be referred to as multigenerational or multigen.

<strong>Appearance</strong>
Because it is not a pure breed, one Labradoodle may have an appearance that is vastly different from another. As a "designer" dog that has its origins in Australia, this dog may look more like a Labrador Retriever, or may have more physical characteristics of a Poodle. If your dog is a puppy that has been bred between Labradoodles rather than between a retriever and Poodle, it will likely be fluffy with a super-soft, ringlet coat. Your pet may be small in size when grown, or moderately large.

In most cases the Labradoodle will weigh between 16 pounds to 65 pounds as an adult (which is a huge range!) and be 14 inches to 23 inches tall, depending on whether it is classified as a miniature, medium, or standard size. Males are almost always larger and heavier than females. As with everything else with the Labradoodle, color and coat vary. Some of the colors often found in this designer dog breed are black, silver, red, blue, chocolate, cream, apricot mixed with gold or cream, even lavender and caramel. Your pet's coat may be fleece-like, long, flowing, and wavy, more like wool and tightly curled like a Poodle or sheep, or it may have hair that is straight to slightly wavy, similar to the Labrador breed which sheds heavily.

<strong>Temperament</strong>
If you're looking for an aggressive breed that will make a great guard dog, the Labradoodle is NOT for you! Neither the Poodle nor Labrador Retriever breeds are known for aggression; instead, they are known for their people-pleasing personalities. With a gentle nature and quiet disposition, the Labradoodle makes an ideal pet for families with children of all ages. This dog also interacts quite well with other pets.

Labs are generally energetic and playful, eager to please, and always happy to see their masters. Poodles are gentle, loving, but can be quite excitable. Combine the two, and you have a puppy that will grow up to be one of the best family dogs you could ever wish for, or the perfect companion for an older couple or disabled individual. Because the Labradoodle is generally very intelligent, intuitive and calm, it is usually very easy to train.

<strong>Proper Environment</strong>
Whether you live in an apartment, a moderate-sized home in a subdivision, or on a farm in a rural area, the Labradoodle will adapt to almost any living environment as long as it gets plenty of daily exercise. A home with a fenced-in yard is ideal. if you live in an apartment, be sure to exercise your pet every day whether you take it for a walk or play in the park. This breed has a lot of energy, so expect your pet to be active even in an apartment setting.

<strong>Health</strong>
Like most dog breeds, Labradoodles are prone to a few health issues such as eye disorders or dysplasia, conditions that affect both Poodles and Labrador Retrievers. However, they are generally very healthy dogs. PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) is a condition which is common in Miniature Poodles, and may be passed down in multigenerational Labradoodles.

Reputable breeders typically test their dogs for health issues prior to breeding, to ensure the healthiest puppies possible. The primary health concerns include muscle myopathy (a degenerative condition which causes weakness), skin allergies and dwarfism, issues found in the Labrador Retriever breed. Addison’s disease ( a hormonal deficiency), Cushing’s disease (manifested by symptoms of hair loss), epilepsy and Von Willebrand's disease (a blood disorder like hemophilia) are health concerns sometimes found in the Poodle breed. Both breeds can experience hypothyroidism. However, if you buy your puppy from a dedicated breeder who focuses on testing to avoid these potential health problems, your puppy will most likely grow up to be a strong, healthy dog with a long lifespan.

As your pet ages, it may be prone to partial blindness, though this is certainly not common.

<strong>Grooming</strong>
Your pet's coat will determine how much grooming it needs. For instance, if your pet has the straighter coat of the pure Labrador Retriever, it will shed more heavily than a dog with a curlier, poodle-like coat. Generally speaking, the Labradoodle requires frequent grooming regardless of variety. This breed's coat tends to tangle and mat, but brushing on a regular basis will help keep the coat in the best possible condition.

If you groom your pet yourself, use thinning shears to remove mats that you cannot brush out. In order to maintain a tidy look, using a combination of shears and clippers will preserve your dog's neat appearance without making it look like a poodle. Trim any hair around the eye area that may obstruct vision, as well as any excess hair inside the ear. Labradoodle puppies require only an occasional bath using gentle shampoo, as excessive bathing will strip your pet's skin of natural oils.

The Golden Retriever , or Flat Coat Golden as they were first registered by The Kennel Club of England in 1903, are a breed of dog with a documented history that stems from Scottish royalty. Originally bred for hunting, the Golden Retriever has a great reputation for their skill and proficiency as hunters, family pets, and as magnificent looking dogs . The roots of this particular breed can be definitively traced back to Sir Dudley Marjoribanks who was also known as Lord Tweedmouth, for the specific goal of trying to create a breed of dog that would be skilled in the hunt for waterfowl, and worthy of an aristocrat. What transpired from Lord Tweedmouth’s meticulous breeding program is a unique dog that is not only intelligent, kind, loyal, and hard-working, but able to traverse difficult terrain in the pursuit of game.

Lord Tweedmouth was a wealthy land developer who resided in Guisachan, an estate in the Scottish Highlands of Glen Affric near Inverness-shire where hunting game was both sport and a means of putting food on the table. Lord Tweedmouth was a very proficient breeder who was able to successfully foster a number of animals such as Scottish ponies and cattle, and most notably the Golden Retriever. The reason we have such an accurate account of Lord Tweedmouth’s Golden Retrievers is for no other reason than that he kept an excellent account of exactly which dogs were brought together to form this breed.

Moreover, The Golden Retriever’s breeding history was made public by the Earl of Ilchester, a great nephew of Lord Tweedmouth, in 1952. As a result, we know that the Golden Retriever descends from two specific dogs, one of which is a yellow Wavy-Coated Retriever named Nous, British for “common sense or intelligence,” purchased in 1865, and deriving from the St. John’s Newfoundland and Irish setter. Nous was the only retriever pup of yellow color in an otherwise black litter that he purchased from a cobbler in Brighton, bred by Lord Chichester. Nous’s mate was a liver-colored Tweed Water- Spaniel named Belle from Ladykirk on the Tweed, and some accounts suggest that she descended from a St. John’s water dog, due to her retriever-like look. Without a deeper examination of the history of each of these dogs, we cannot comment with complete accuracy as to their ancestry. However, what we do know is that the Tweed Water-Spaniel no longer exists, and that from these two dogs, a litter of four was produced that set in motion today’s Golden Retriever.

From the mating of Belle and Nous in 1868, three females and a male, Ada, Crocus, Primrose and Cowslip, made up the first litter. Lord Tweedmouth kept Primrose and Cowslip for his own breeding purposes and gave Ada to the fifth Earl of Ilchester. The male pup, Crocus, was given to the second Lord Tweedmouth. From Primrose and Cowslip, we have the makings of our present day Golden Retriever and the specific dogs that were mixed in order to fit Lord Tweedmouth’s vision. The dogs that were bred include an Irish setter, the St. Johns Water Dog of Newfoundland, a sandy-colored Bloodhound, and two Wavy-Coated Black Retrievers. In addition, Lord Tweedmouth would occasionally reintroduce a Tweed Water Spaniel, a Labrador Retriever , and a Red Setter. This created the perfect dog for hunting as well as imbuing characteristics such as gentleness, the ability to navigate water, and exceptional trainability. Virtually every account that has been written about Lord Tweedmouth’s breeding program shows that it met with great success, which is a testament to his skill and love of breeding dogs.

It was clearly established which dogs were bred to create the Golden Retriever, and why Lord Tweedmouth chose to mix these dogs. Lord Tweedmouth was a sporting gentleman who very much enjoyed the hunt for waterfowl on his estate with his countrymen. Recent innovations in weaponry of the period allowed shotguns to shoot at greater distances; therefore, it was necessary to have keen dogs capable of waterfowl retrievals in rough terrain. The type of breeding incorporated, along with new gun technology, showed how proficient retrievers were in the field. Most breed dogs today have been widely taken out of the workforce and become show dogs or family pets. This likely began when retrievers were introduced in the early 20th century for show.

Lord Tweedmouth kept the yellow retriever away from the public eye until one of his prized dogs won the first field trial for retrievers in 1904. Yellow Retrievers thereafter were registered as Yellow Retrievers, Retrievers-Wavy or Flat-Coated. After the introduction of Lord Tweedmouth’s dogs, they were exhibited in Britain in 1908, by Viscount Harcourt, who began a Culham line, with stock from the Earl of Portsmouth. Consequently this is when retrievers, Golden and Yellow, were first classified and showed prominence by placing first in Bench Competition. In 1913, the Golden was given a separate breed class and became the Golden Retriever; henceforth, the Golden Retriever Club was founded that same year.

Officially, the name Golden Retriever was accepted in 1920; however, in 1881, Archie Majoribanks, the youngest son of Lord Tweedmouth, brought a Golden Retriever to Canada and in 1894, he registered his retriever Lady, with the <a href="http://www.akc.org/breeds/golden_retriever/index.cfm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">American Kennel Club (AKC)</a> , but it wasn’t until 1925 that the AKC officially registered the breed. In 1893, the first Golden Retriever was documented in the United States and from here on out we can assume that America fell in love with this dog. In addition, Canada registered a Golden Retriever in 1927 and played a significant role in developing the Golden Retriever of today. The Golden Retriever Club of America was founded in 1938, and is closely related to the AKC, the present day standard of which is followed. Lord Tweedmouth died in 1894, but managed to leave behind a very profound canine legacy.

We can look at the characteristics of a modern Golden Retriever and discern what temperament and abilities Lord Tweedmouth was looking for. However, there are some distinct differences between the American Golden Retriever and the British line. The English Golden Retriever is wider, shorter, and more muscular, with a forehead that is a bit more block-like. In addition, their chests are deeper, with shorter legs and shorter tails. They are also heavier and have a height of 22-24 inches at the withers, the tallest point being behind the neck at the shoulders. Females are slightly shorter at 20-21inches with narrower heads. The eyes are a bit darker and rounder as opposed to the more triangular and slanted shape of the American breed.

The “cream colored retrievers, <a href="https://www.pets4you.com/english-cream-golden-retriever/">English Crème Golden Retrievers</a> , English Golden Retrievers, European Golden Retrievers, Blond Golden Retrievers, Light Golden Retriever or White Golden Retrievers are also listed as White Goldens, and Platinum Blond Goldens.” The AKC standard retriever is longer and slimmer than its British counterpart, and is 22-24 inches at shoulder height; females are shorter at 21-½ to 22-½ inches, 65-75 pounds for males, and 55-56 pounds for females. Moreover, the title "English Golden Retriever” is not used solely to describe a retriever coming from England; it is also a standard by which a retriever is judged.

The Golden Retriever, used in the field, needs all of the distinct abilities that were originally bred into it. They are known as non-slip retrievers, which are dogs who are able to sit quietly in hunting blinds until they are ordered to retrieve game, both on land and water – as well as able to walk without making any sound at heel. In addition, they need to be biddable, which is the ability to take direction from owners and handlers. Although many retrievers today are household pets in America, they are still quite proficient in working as bird dogs, trackers, narcotics-detection dogs, and guide dogs for blind and physically-challenged people.

In order to be proficient bird dogs, retrievers must have soft mouths so that they do not destroy game. Furthermore, today’s retriever must have good physical attributes such as strength and good athletic ability in order to pursue game and walk for long periods of time. Besides being a hunter, the golden retriever is an excellent companion for any homeowner who is willing to provide the kind of environment they need in order to thrive. As with most highly active breeds of dogs, plenty of exercise is paramount to their happiness and success as family pets. These dogs are not bred to exist in all family situations. They are not suited for small confined spaces such as apartments or limited backyard areas with an owner not willing to spend adequate time to ensure the dog’s physical and mental health.

One of the down sides, if any, of owning and taking care of a Golden Retriever is health-related issues that may arise due to their breeding history. The average lifespan is anywhere from 10 to 12 years and they are susceptible to a wide array of medical problems. Some of these problems include cancer, cataracts, hip Dysplasia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, heart problems, Von Willebrand's disease, skin disorders. They also gain weight quite easily, so one should be careful not overfeed this breed of dog. However, this should not dissuade the serious dog owner from having a companion that loves children, is extremely loyal, friendly, intelligent, and overall very good-natured. Golden Retrievers will thrive in a loving environment, where they can both get love and give love freely.

Grooming a Golden Retriever as an essential part of any well-maintained dog care program, and this breed is no exception. You should dry shampoo on a regular basis, but only bathe when necessary. One must always remember that Golden Retriever’s outer coats were designed to endure very wet conditions. They are considered an average shedder, which means that brushing and combing twice a week is a good way to remove wooly hair from their dense undercoats. If you use a firm bristled brush you’ll have success in keeping your dog well maintained. The Golden Retriever is a fine breed of dog that will provide many years of companionship if kept active throughout its life.
